Get ready for a whole new generation of Wildcats.

Disney has been hard at work developing the next chapter of its iconic High School Musical saga, and now, it looks as though the studio has found its male lead in Joshua Bassett.

In a press release sent out on Wednesday (October 17), Disney revealed that actor Joshua Bassett has officially been cast in the lead role of the highly anticipated High School Musical: The Musical.

The fourth installment of the iconic franchise won’t be told in a made-for-tv format. Instead, it’ll manifest itself in a 10-episode series which will premiere exclusively on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform.

As for what the series will focus on, well let’s just say things are about to get pretty meta.

Per the official synopsis for the new series, High School Musical: The Musical will focus on a group of high school students working on staging a performance of High School Musical for their fall theater production. The drama won’t be confined to the stage, though — as the students move forth with their journey, they’ll realize there’s plenty of drama happening offstage as well.

Longtime HSM fans can expect to hear some familiar tunes mixed in with some new bops through the 10-episode run. In fact, Disney promises that “every episode will include a new rendition of a beloved song from High School Musical as well as an original song.”

As for Bassett, he’ll be playing a character named Ricky who is described as “a cynical but charming high school junior.” His motivation for auditioning is a last ditch effort to win back his ex-girlfriend Nini by scoring the lead role opposite her in their school musical.

There’s no word yet on when the series will make its grand debut, but we’re sure we’ll get more details with regards to a release date after Disney launches their streaming platform in 2019.
