Joseph Gordon-Levitt was set to star and produce a Sandman adaptation, but the actor has just announced he’s left the project.

Announcing his exit from the project via his official Facebook page, Gordon-Levitt has revealed that he and New Line “just don’t see eye to eye” on what was going to make the Sandman movie special.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt says, “A few months ago, I came to realize that the folks at New Line and I just don’t see eye to eye on what makes Sandman special, and what a film adaptation could/should be. So unfortunately, I decided to remove myself from the project. I wish nothing but the best for the team moving forward.”

The actor continued, revealing he’s had a great time on Sandman, and says “I’ve had a blast with and learned a ton from David and Jack. Niija Kuykendall, Greg Silverman, and everyone at Warner Brothers have been fantastic, as have Geoff Johns and everyone at DC. And it’s been a particular privilege as well as a rocking good time getting to know Mr. Gaiman, whose generous insights and masterful work have certainly convinced me that the Lord of Dreams and the Prince of Stories are one and the same Endless pattern.”

It’s unclear what this means for Sandman, as it certainly has its own unique style and may be a difficult film to successfully adapt. Without Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who seemed to be pushing to get the film made the most, we’ll be curious to find out how the studio moves forward.

Since Gordon-Levitt was going to star in the film (and produce), it’ll be interesting to find out if this causes the film to be scrapped or not. New Line may end up just finding another actor to star in the film, but a lot of the interest in the film was due to Joe’s involvement.

The actor leaves the project just one day after New Line announced that they had hired Final Destination 5 screenwriter Eric Heisserer for the film’s adaptation which was set to be based on Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series which is a collection of stories which dates back to 1989.
