Longtime Daily Show anchor Jon Stewart has announced when he’s stepping down from his post.

Update 2 (April 20, 2015): On his show Monday night, Stewart said his final episode will air Thursday, August 6.

At this time it’s not clear when his replacement, Trevor Noah, will begin his program. There was a month-long gap in between Larry Wilmore’s Nightly Show and Stephen Colbert’s Colbert Report — perhaps there will be a similar gap in between Stewart and Noah.

Update 1 (February 10, 2015): Watch as Jon Stewart explains the reasons for which he will be leaving the Daily Show:

Details began to surface after those who attended the taping started sharing the news on social media. Comedy Central then confirmed the news themselves.

“For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart. His comedic brilliance is second to none,” Comedy Central’s Michele Ganeless said in a statement. “Jon has been at the heart of Comedy Central, championing and nurturing the best talent in the industry, in front of and behind the camera. Through his unique voice and vision, The Daily Show has become a cultural touchstone for millions of fans and an unparalleled platform for political comedy that will endure for years to come.”

The show’s official Twitter account shared this tease moments ago:

Stewart will be stepping down sometime toward the end of 2015, Comedy Central says. He has been hosting The Daily Show for 16 years.

The news comes only a couple of months after Stephen Colbert closed down his 11:30 p.m. Colbert Report program to become host of CBS’ The Late Show. Report was replaced by The Nightly Show starring Larry Wilmore last month.

Needless to say, Comedy Central is going to have a very hard time finding someone worthy of replacing Stewart as host of The Daily Show. Presumably they will try to keep the program around since its been such a huge part of the channel.

The writing may’ve been on the wall for a while now. Stewart took a 12-week break from The Daily Show to film his directorial debut Rosewater in 2013. During his absence, John Oliver filled in as Daily Show host then went on to get his own weekly Daily Show-esque program on HBO. Last Week Tonight has been a huge hit with viewers and critics alike.

Will Stewart launch a new television show elsewhere? Will he stick with movies? Will he spend the rest of his days in a rocking chair sipping lemonade? Only time will tell.

We expect a clip of Stewart making his announcement will be released by Comedy Central sometime this evening. We’ll be sure to share Stewart’s remarks once they hit the internet.
