Lucasfilm has announced that a live-action Star Wars TV series is in development from director Jon Favreau.

The Iron Man, live-action Jungle Book, and live-action Lion King director will be writing the new Star Wars TV show for Disney’s forthcoming Netflix competitor which is launching in 2019.

“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in a statement. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”

Said Favreau, “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”

Lucasfilm notes that Favreau has had his hand in the Star Wars universe previously via the animated series Rebels and this summer’s Solo.

The franchise is clearly on track to expand in big ways. In recent months Lucasfilm have also announced two major Star Wars film series coming from the Game of Thrones showrunners and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

Favreau’s live-action Star Wars show will be a major selling point for Disney’s Netflix competitor, which will also have original series in the worlds of Marvel, Monsters Inc, and High School Musical. Disney’s existing film and TV catalogue are also expected to be a part of the service.
