After hints on Twitter, Jon Favreau has been confirmed as the director of Disney’s new The Lion King.

Yes, that’s right: Following the success of The Jungle Book, Jon Favreau is continuing his creative collaboration with Disney, and directing another (presumably) CGI-heavy movie about animals that can talk.

Disney writes in a press release, “The Lion King builds on Disney’s success of reimagining its classics for a contemporary audience with films like Maleficent, Cinderella, and the upcoming Beauty and the Beast.”

Further, Disney confirms that The Lion King will include songs from the animated film from 1994. The movie is reportedly being pushed up the schedule, but no release date has been set yet.

Here’s Jon Favreau’s original tweet, which was briefly deleted before being re-posted (they probably figured the “cat” was out of the bag):

Incidentally, Favreau and Disney are also developing a sequel to The Jungle Book.

I’ve previously expressed my skepticism with Disney’s many simulated-reality remakes, but The Jungle Book was a total turnaround for me.

That movie was genuinely so good, the animals so full of life and character, that I finally realized the real reason Disney is rebooting all of these classics.

As Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon recently explained, “Technology has caught up to the ideas that were introduced in that movie,” which allows for such a totally different, much more magical visual experience.

While The Lion King is (in my opinion) a much better movie at the outset than Jungle Book, and we might therefore be more worried about the original movie being tarnished by a modern remake, I feel pretty confident with Jon Favreau in charge.

How about you? Are you pumped for Disney’s reimagined Lion King movie?
