The teaser trailer for Transcendence, the first film directed by Wally Pfister, Christopher Nolan’s frequent cinematographer, has just been released.

In the teaser trailer, Johnny Depp’s character explains that what he calls Transcendence is the scientific idea of singularity, or the moment when artificial intelligence will be greater than human intelligence.

The teaser doesn’t show very much past Depp’s character’s explanation, but it is only a teaser.

Transcendence will be the directorial debut for Wally Pfister. Pfister is most known for his work as a cinematographer, most notably for his work with The Dark Knight and Inception director Christopher Nolan. Pfister won an Oscar in 2011 for his fantastic work on Inception. It’ll be interesting to see Pfister have even more control behind the camera. Even though he won’t be credited as cinematographer, he’s certain to have a big hand in setting up every shot.

Along with Depp, the rest of the cast is top notch. Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, and Paul Bettany will also star in the film.

It’ll certainly be nice to see Depp in a more “normal” role. At the very least, we’ll be able to see his face. Director Pfister said, “I don’t think we’ve seen him [Depp] this way in a long time, just a pair of glasses on and a pretty normal haircut.”

Here’s the official synopsis:

Two leading computer scientists work toward their goal of Technological Singularity, as a radical anti-technology organization fights to prevent them from creating a world where computers can transcend the abilities of the human brain.

‘Transcendence’ hits theaters April 14, 2014
