The John Wick cinematic universe will be expanding with a new female-fronted, female-centric spinoff movie called Ballerina!

John Wick 4 is headed our way in 2021, but it looks like it won’t be the only John Wick movie we’ll have to look forward to.

Deadline broke the news earlier today that a spinoff movie of the popular action series — titled Ballerina — has been put on the fast track at Lionsgate.

According to the report, Ballerina focuses on a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. The character was briefly seen in John Wick 3: Parabellum, with actress Unity Phelan listed in the credits of that movie as Ballerina. However, it’s unknown who the star of the spinoff movie will be.

Ballerina will be produced by Basil Iwanyk (who produced John Wick 2, Sicario and The Town) and Erica Lee (producer of the last two films), with Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski likewise involved in producing roles. It’s currently unknown whether or not Keanu Reeves will make an appearance in the film as John Wick, though if he does, it would only be a cameo.

Though we’re likely still a ways out from any casting news, we do have an idea of the creative team behind the film so far, and it’s an impressive one.

Ballerina will be directed by Len Wiseman, who is best known for launching another female-driven action franchise — the vampire and werewolf action series Underworld, starring Kate Beckinsale. He’s likewise directed Live Free or Die Hard and did fantastic work on Lucifer, Sleepy Hollow and the fan favorite, yet cancelled too soon Swamp Thing.

The script will come from Shay Hatten, who wrote John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum. Her upcoming project is the Zack Snyder directed zombie heist movie, Army of the Dead, which will release later next year on Netflix.
