Brexit is probably going to destroy Europe, but hey! Silver lining! It might instill just enough fear in Americans to not make the same mistake.

Before the U.K. voted on whether or not to leave the European Union (and before the ensuing shitstorm in which the Leave voters, upon winning, realized that they’d made a terrible mistake), John Oliver dedicated a Last Week Tonight segment to tell them that Brexit was a horrible idea.

Evidently, a lot of British voters felt like voting Leave was a great way to ‘stick it’ to the EU — unfortunately, that middle finger is going to cost the country dearly, and negatively affect the most at-risk groups of the population.

As we wait to see what happens to the EU and Europe as a result of this catastrophic vote, the world’s eyes turn to the U.S. — which is facing pretty much the same situation later this year.

While there are obviously people out there who genuinely believe that voting for Donald Trump best serves their interests, there’s an alarming lack of people on both sides of the aisle who think voting for Trump will be a wake-up call to the nation; that it’ll force a collapse of broken systems and somehow result in positive change.

If Brexit has taught us anything, it’s that the world doesn’t work that way. You vote for Trump, you’re stuck with Trump.

Let John Oliver convince you why you need to look at Brexit as a cautionary tale:

Says Oliver of Britain’s situation (and why they royally f***ed themselves with this vote), “First, Britain was already independent. In fact, it’s what many other countries celebrate their independence from. And second, the sequel to the movie they’re quoting actually opened this week and features the wholesale destruction of London — which is beginning to feel pretty f—ing appropriate now.”
