Independence? Pfft. On July 4, John Oliver reminded Americans that they lost out on such U.K. wonders as “an elderly woman who frowns for a living” when they split from Britain.

Before Brexit, we had Amerexit. Yesterday was July 4, America’s Independence Day — you know, that day in 1776 when Hamilton and co. made King George really grumpy in Hamilton.

In a Last Week Tonight web exclusive, John Oliver wishes Americans a happy Independence Day, while also pointing out all the British things they’re now missing out on. Enjoy:

While obviously the Americans are missing out on amazing British things like the Queen, meat pies, and John Oliver’s own “beautiful vowel sounds,” the perhaps greatest loss is simple: Pessimism.

“The thing Americans are really missing out on is pessimism,” says Oliver. “Americans are optimistic people who believe the sky is the limit. Whereas in Britain, we are painfully aware of our limits.”

“In fact, he continues, “just look at the British sky itself – even the sun is incapable of asserting itself.”

Although considering the current mess the United Kingdom has gotten itself (and all of Europe by extension) into, John Oliver has to concede that, “honestly, you are probably way better off with the way that things are.”

Happy belated Independence Day, Americans. Or, as it’s known in the rest of the world, “the fourth of July and that’s all.”

John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight is currently on break, but returns to HBO with new episodes on Sunday, July 24.
