John Oliver is the latest talk show host to throw shade at Fifty Shades of Grey, here apologizing to Jamie Dornan for perpetuating the #NotMyChristian hashtag.

Oliver’s HBO show Last Week Tonight has impressed viewers with its astute commentary on social issues, including Net Neutrality and Civil Forfeiture.

But, “Sometimes I do go too far,” Oliver admits in his newest web exclusive. Now, “in the grand tradition of television personalities who’ve made mistakes, I would like to offer a condescending, half-hearted apology that I don’t really mean.”

Oliver goes on to take credit for the #NotMyChristian social media hashtag used by Fifty Shades of Grey fans to express their disappointment with the casting of Christian Grey:

Oliver reveals that his real complaint is not the fact that Jamie Dornan landed the role. Rather, “it’s Hollywood’s unimaginative casting.”

Considering they were looking for an actor to play the character E.L. James has described as, “the epitome of male beauty,” Oliver thinks “it hurts not to even have been asked.”

He goes on to record his audition, “for a movie that has already been made, based on a book I have never read.” What could go wrong?

We think Oliver would be the perfect Christian Grey. Especially in the version of Fifty Shades of Grey which also stars Ellen DeGeneres:

Fifty Shades of Grey actually stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, and hits cinemas on Feb. 13, 2015.
