Earning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, or a Tony is a huge deal, but earning all four is a rare accomplishment, and John Legend has done just that.

John Legend is an outstanding artist. While he’s most known for the amazing music he creates, he’s also taken a few turns producing and acting in shows like Underground as Frederick Douglass and in NBC’s live musical concert event for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.

So it’s not surprising to hear that such a multi-talented individual has earned several impressive awards, but during Sunday night’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards, he joined a very exclusive club. Thanks to his brilliant work in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, Legend earned an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live), making him not only one of the very small number of individuals to have earned EGOT status (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony), but also making him the first Black man to win all four awards.

It’s an important step forward in racial diversity in the arts community, and a monumental achievement for John Legend. The accolade is one that is more than earned. He’s previously won an Oscar for his work on the song “Glory” for the movie Selma, he earned his Tony for his work as the producer for the revival of the play Jitney, and he’s been nominated for and won several Grammys over the years for his amazing music.

Legend won his Emmy (and the EGOT status) alongside of his Jesus Christ Superstar partners Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice. As Variety reports, Legend earned the award for his role as producer, and Weber and Rice won for their role as lyricists and composer of the original musical.

Naturally, Legend took to Instagram to revel in this groundbreaking moment.

We’re so happy for John Legend. He’s more than earned such a huge honor, and we can’t wait to see what amazing art he creates next!
