In a surprising turn of events, John Green, Veronica Roth, and J.K. Rowling all simultaneously decided to share regrets about their most popular books.

While we know that some things are bound to change during the process of writing a book, the three author’s used today, April 1, to reveal details about their first drafts that we never would have expected.

John Green was first of the three authors to confess something shocking about his first draft: The original Looking For Alaska was about the dessert “Baked Alaska” featuring browned meringue on top. “I’d actually written all of Looking for Basked Alaska as a story of Miles looking for the perfect Baked Alaska in the U.S. Then one day I accidentally left out the word “baked” in the title and was left with Looking for Alaska. The image of a girl popped into my head, and the story you ended up finding on at a bookstore was born.”

He added that his original concept still haunts him. “I think, actually, I’d still like to see Miles search for that dessert. And come to think of it, baked alaska never even made an appearance in the end result. I wish there was more baked alaska.”

Looking for Alaska is one of Green’s most popular novels, so it’s hard to imagine the story being so different. Afterwards, Green added another surprising tidbit: “Up until the very last second, Paper Towns was going to be about an actual town made out of paper. I’m pissed my editor made me change it.”

Veronica Roth, author of the Divergent series, also revealed an interesting first draft. “Caleb was going to be the main protagonist in my story, actually,” she explains. “And then I realized that there are too many novels with male protagonists, and even though the first few Caleb/Four scenes I wrote were really steamy, I think I’ll leave the LGBT fiction to David Levithan.”

Imagine that! We’d have been very interested in seeing Tris as the Erudite of the family, if Roth had her original idea published. Plus, could you imagine Ansel Elgort and Theo James going at it? There’s not enough air conditioning in the world to cool us down from seeing that!

And last but definitely not least, J.K. Rowling came forward today with a new Harry Potter regret. Earlier this year J.K. Rowling admitted that Ron and Hermione were not her preferred pairing, which took the Harry Potter fandom by storm. Once this information was released to the public there was a combination of outrage and confusion from dedicated Ron/Hermione shippers, paired with happiness and celebration from those who shipped Harry and Hermione all along.

You’d have thought that the outrage caused by the announcement would have swayed Rowling to say mum on her opinions and preferences for how the books should have turned out, but it seems that is not the case.

“I just wish it wasn’t so bloody popular,” the famed author states. “Then I could’ve made all the changes I want. Some of my editors believe I can pull a George Lucas and publish whole new editions with all the things I wanted for real, but I don’t know how well that would turn out. But if it means I can finally pair Draco with Harry then I’m all for it.”

Surprisingly intrigued in this new change, we asked Rowling when she first decided to ship Drarry. “It was the fan art. I mean, when you see fan art that beautiful it just changes you. I’ve also seen some very mind boggling art of Draco with an apple, and I have to say they’ve inspired some new scenes.”

It seems like all our favorite authors have ideas that they wish made it to their series, so don’t be too harsh on any of them. As Green once said, “books belong to their readers,” and rightly so! Now we’re off to find Looking for Baked Alaska on Green’s hard drive.
