John Cho appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to promote his new comedy series Selfie, and discuss its controversial title.

Selfie is an upcoming ABC sitcom starring John Cho and Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) as modern incarnations of the My Fair Lady characters Eliza and Henry.

In the modern-day retelling, Eliza is rising not from poverty and unrefined behaviour, but from an unhealthy obsession with social media. Henry is her guide to becoming a better, more conscientious person, “re-branding” her into someone more likeable.

John Cho appeared on Jimmy Kimmel’s talkshow Monday night to discuss the new series, which has been met with mixed reviews following the early release of its pilot (watch it now on Hulu, if you haven’t already).

In the interview, Cho addressed the very negative response they have been getting to the title of the show, which in his opinion gives people the wrong idea about the series.

“Let me be frank. People hate the title of our show,” he says, adding, “but I think it works in our favour” because the name lowers expectations for the series.

However, that’s not necessarily a good thing. You want people to tune in, after all, and not be turned off before even giving it a chance!

Kimmel points out that if nothing else, the name is incredibly memorable (for better or worse).

Cho also humorously adds that his father calls the show “Self Picture.”

Note: the video is currently listed as private on YouTube, but hopefully it’ll be made available again soon. You can see another part of the John Cho interview, where he discusses his childhood encounter with Morrissey, right here.

Selfie premieres Tuesday, September 30 at 8/7c on ABC.

Have you had a chance to watch the Selfie pilot? And do you like the title, or agree with Cho that it misrepresents the series?
