Star Wars actor John Boyega has been cast in Kathryn Bigelow’s movie about the 1967 Detroit riots.

The movie, which is currently known as ‘The Untitled Detroit Project,’ is tentatively slated for 2017.

The Wrap reports that Bigelow’s movie is ‘a crime drama,’ taking place in Detroit in the summer of 1967. The movie will track the infamous riots that almost destroyed the city, and tackle the rampant racism that led to the revolts.

The Detroit Riots of 1967, also known as the ’12th Street riot,’ is remembered as one of the deadliest, bloodiest and most destructive riots in U.S. history.

It began with a police raid of an unlicensed bar, which evolved into a five-day long riot of property destruction and horrific violence. The Army was brought in to resolve the situation, and once the dust settled, 43 people were dead, over 1,000 were left injured, and more than 2,000 buildings had been destroyed.

No details about John Boyega’s role have yet been revealed, but we’ll keep you posted. Boyega, who just finished filming Star Wars: Episode VIII, will also star in and produce the highly anticipated Pacific Rim sequel.

Boyega can next be seen on the big screen later this year in The Circle, which also stars Emma Watson, Karen Gillan, Tom Hanks, and Ellen Wong. His voice can currently be heard in the short animated series Tinkershrimp & Dutch.

Kathryn Bigelow will direct and produce the ‘Untitled Detroit Project,’ from a script by her longtime collaborator Mark Boal; the two last collaborated on Zero Dark Thirty in 2012, and in 2009, they won a Best Picture Oscar for The Hurt Locker.
