Netflix’s Rebel Ridge will have to carry on without John Boyega.

According to Variety, actor John Boyega has officially departed from the upcoming Netflix Original feature, Rebel Ridge.

Boyega’s exit comes as the film rounds off its first month of shooting, with production having originally started out in Louisiana on May 3.

In a statement confirming the Star Wars vet’s sudden departure, a spokesperson for Netflix revealed that Boyega chose to exit the project due to family reasons.

Rebel Ridge is pausing temporarily as we look to recast John Boyega who needed to leave the project for family reasons,” said the spokesperson. “We remain committed to Jeremy Saulnier’s extraordinary film and look forward to resuming production. We look forward to continuing our partnership with John Boyega’s UpperRoom Productions, in addition to our upcoming film ‘They Cloned Tyrone’ in which he also stars.”

Netflix didn’t allude to who might be up for consideration to take over the role Boyega has left behind, but it sounds as though the streamer plans to recast the role sooner rather than later.

Helmed by Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room), plot details for Rebel Ridge are sparse, but the film is set to explore systemic American injustice in the context of action, suspense, and black humor.

Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see Rebel Ridge debut via Netflix.
