Joey King has signed on to star in another young adult book adaptation coming down the pipeline at Netflix.

According to Deadline, The Kissing Booth star Joey King has signed on to star in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies.

Originally published in 2005, Westerfeld’s book is set in the future in a dystopian world where everyone is considered to be an “Ugly” at birth. It’s not until they reach the age of 16 that the members of the dystopian society are turned “Pretty” through a series of extreme cosmetic surgeries.

The book follows Tally Youngblood, a teenager who decides to rebel against the society norm after she witnesses the downsides to becoming a “Pretty” through the experiences of her friends.

Westerfeld’s Uglies serves as the first book in a series, which includes three other installments, Pretties, Specials and Extras.

King is set to play the lead role in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the first novel in Westerfeld’s dystopian series. In addition to starring in the movie, she’ll also be serving as an executive producer on the project along with Westerfeld himself.

Behind the camera, the streamer has tapped McG to serve as director on the project. McG is no stranger to working with Netflix, having previously served as director on the streamer’s original movies, Rim of The World (2019) and The Babysitter: Killer Queen.

Meanwhile, Krista Vernoff (who currently works as showrunner and executive producer on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy has been tasked with penning the script for the adaptation.

Currently, there’s no word on when we can except the Uglies adaptation to debut via Netflix.
