Universal Studios has picked the producer of Snow White and the Huntsman and Alice in Wonderland to play the same role in adapting Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone to the big screen.

According to an article in Deadline, Universal Studios has announced the selection of Joe Roth to produce the film adaptation of the popular young adult fantasy novel, The Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

Laini Taylor’s vivid and wildly innovative novel blends elements of high fantasy with modern-day wit, grounding heady mysticism in gritty details both foreign and familiar. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone follows an enigmatic (and deceptively innocent) protagonist named Karou, a teenaged girl who so adroitly straddles the ordinary and fantastical elements of her life that it is only when she is confronted with mysterious, destructive forces that she begins to realize just how much of her own history has been hidden from her.

Joe Roth, who in addition to Snow White and the Huntsman has produced Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and the upcoming Oz: The Great and Powerful, seems to be an excellent fit for the novel. Taylor’s larger-than-life protagonist and the mercurially mystical tone of The Daughter of Smoke and Bone will provide an excitingly original mythology for the film’s creative team. Roth called the novel “a story of identity and destiny that welcomes readers into a fantastical world with a unique mythology. It is very different than anything we’ve seen before,” he said, “And I look forward to bringing the fascinating characters to the big screen.”

The novel’s sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight, was published in October to very strong reviews. We here at Hypable were eager to include The Daughter of Smoke and Bone in our Holiday Gift Guide, and will keep you updated on further developments in the series!
