Her star Joaquin Phoenix is reportedly in final negotiations with Marvel to play the starring role in their new Doctor Strange adaptation.

Over the last few months there have been rumors that multiple Oscar and Golden Globe nominees were in the running to play the role of Doctor Strange. From Jared Leto to Benedict Cumberbatch, the lead role was being attached to half a dozen top actors.

Now Collider reports that Golden Globe winning actor Joaquin Phoenix is in final negotiations to star in Marvel’s Doctor Strange.

Doctor Strange is a neurosurgeon who serves as the Sorcerer Supreme protecting Earth against any threats via his incredibly magical powers and martial arts.

Phoenix certainly feels like he would do a fine job playing a neurosurgeon with incredible intelligence and magical abilities. He pulled off one of 2013’s best roles in Her, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Phoenix looks as though he’s at the top of a very short list now and we wouldn’t be surprised to find out that his involvement will be announced by Marvel in the coming weeks. Phoenix will be a unique fit to join Marvel’s cinematic universe and Doctor Strange will require an actor of his caliber to help warm audiences up to the character.

While we’ve known about the Doctor Strange adaptation for some time, we’re just starting to get more solid reports of who may join the film’s cast after Sinister director Scott Derrickson revealed on twitter recently that his next movie will be “STRANGE.” Marvel has confirmed that he would be directing their Doctor Strange adaptation.

Writers Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer are currently penning the script for Doctor Strange and we expect to hear more about the film now that Phoenix is essentially locked into the lead role.
