Last night’s mid-season finale of Grey’s Anatomy left us with more questions than answers, including where Jo and Alex are heading in their relationship.

It’s no secret that Jo has always had a hard time with Meredith and Alex’s unique friendship. From the outside looking in it’s pretty understandable to see why Jo is uncomfortable. Meredith and Alex basically have no boundaries with one another because they both understand that their relationship is purely platonic. Meredith has never looked at Alex that way and never will, but that doesn’t mean Jo can be comfortable it.

And even though we love Meredith and Alex’s relationship, especially since they’re the last two of the original interns, we can see where Jo is coming from. Jo wants the kind of love where she comes before anyone else, because she’s always come last to her family. Everyone has basically abandoned her and she doesn’t want to see that happen with Alex. But she’s already feeling a level of abandonment because he is putting Meredith before Jo. Again we get why, but he’s expecting Jo to jump all in to a relationship when he’s not really doing the same.

After an entire day of being brushed aside by Alex for Meredith, Jo fully intended to break up with him when she came home from work on the Grey’s Anatomy season 12 mid-season finale. She told Alex, “This isn’t working. I need someone in my corner. And the more I look at it the only person I have is me. And I don’t want to make you choose between me and your friends — your friend. But I can’t keep feeling like everyone’s second choice. Especially not yours. So I’m going to stay with Steph for a while.”

What she wasn’t expecting was for him to propose to her right there. But does it change what she had to say? It doesn’t seem that way because she then told him, “You think this will make everything okay but you don’t listen.” The problem is that they’re not on the same page right now. Even if they both love each other, Alex is happy to keep moving on with things how they are and Jo wants more from him.

So will she say yes or no? We’re not convinced that she’ll say yes, no matter how happy it would make our little shipper hearts. But we’re not sure she’ll say no either. Could they possibly take a step back for a while to evaluate things and work on their relationship? It doesn’t seem like their relationship could last without some big change, engagement or not. So we hope that Alex is ready to fight for Jo.
