Perfectly timed to celebrate the birthday of J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter, Pottermore has released the final chapters of the fourth installment Goblet of Fire.

As always, we jumped straight to the “New from J.K. Rowling” areas to see what the author released with this batch of chapters.

In a new passage about owls, Rowling admits her lack of knowledge concerning Hedwig’s species was evident in her writing. “Firstly, Snowy Owls are diurnal (ie, they fly by day),” she writes. “Secondly, they are virtually mute, so Hedwig’s frequent hoots and chirrups of approval and comfort should be taken as signs of her magically enhanced abilities. Thirdly, as countless well-meaning owl-lovers and experts kept writing to me in the early days, owls do not eat bacon (Hedwig enjoys a bit of bacon rind when she delivers post at breakfast).”

On illness, Rowling says that she took time to consider how wizards would be able to handle illnesses using their magical abilities. “I decided that, broadly speaking, wizards would have the power to correct or override ‘mundane’ nature, but not ‘magical’ nature. Therefore, a wizard could catch anything a Muggle might catch, but he could cure all of it; he would also comfortably survive a scorpion sting that might kill a Muggle, whereas he might die if bitten by a Venomous Tentacula.”

Finally, in a new piece about The Great Lake, the author reveals that an early draft of Chamber of Secrets had the Ford Anglia driven by Ron and Harry crashing into the iconic body of water.

There are also new thoughts about the Pensieve.

Plus: Remember that new book penned by Rita Skeeter, set for release today? It’s now available through Pottermore for purchase using their Galleon currency, but when you purchase it you only get to see the cover, not what’s inside:

At the time of this writing, Rowling hasn’t tweeted anything about the seventh anniversary of Harry Potter or the character’s birthday despite a recent surge in her usage of Twitter.
