As promised, last night Harry Potter and The Casual Vacancy author J.K. Rowling appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

You can now watch an extended version of her interview which didn’t air last night.

Stewart, if you don’t know, is a comedian and well-educated interviewer, so what came of this interview is a very fun but serious conversation. For example, the conversation turns to the part of Rowling’s life where she was on welfare, and Stewart notes that getting assistance from the government paid off very well for the United Kingdom.

Later in the conversation, Rowling starts explaining The Casual Vacancy‘s plot. Stewart replies, “And if I may spoil it…” Rowling cuts him off, then says “Dumbledore comes back.” After a debate over whether or not the American political parties had switched their colors, Rowling then suggests America needs a monarch and goes so far to say the Queen would probably take us back.

Today Rowling will host a Q&A, reading, and signing of The Casual Vacancy at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Hypable staff will be on hand to cover the event. We’ll also be passing along a list of sentence-long messages you gave us to pass on to Rowling.
