Every Harry Potter scholar knows that J.K. Rowling loves planting seeds long before a big reveal. The November release of Grindelwald shows that she’s still pulling those delightful tricks.

Spoiler warning!

At the end of The Crimes of Grindelwald, the titular character provides Credence Barebone with a bombshell: He’s actually the brother of Albus Dumbledore, and his name is Aurelius Dumbledore.

The twist was quite the cliffhanger, and it’s left fans rampantly speculating about how it could be possible and what it all means. In true J.K. Rowling fashion it looks like she’s been hinting at the Aurelius twist for over two years. Check out the banner at the top of her website’s “Answers” page:

Notice anything interesting?

Yep, Rowling has been featuring a book about the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius at the top of a page on her website. His musings have received a 4.5-star rating on Amazon.

But here’s what also interesting: I dug into the source code of her site, and the image appears to have been uploaded in October 2016 (it’s in the WordPress-created folder “wp-content/uploads/2016/10/JKR_Banner_OPINION_Final.jpg”). This means Rowling said to herself over two years ago, “Let’s hint at Movie 2 before Movie 1 is released.” That’s so Jo.

While I’m no student of philosophy or emperors, I’m decent at Google-ing. Marcus ruled with his adoptive brother, Lucius Verus, but Lucius died 8 years into their reign. An adopted brother certainly sounds like a plot line Rowling can be working toward between “Credence” and Albus, but I’m sure Rowling is drawing deeper connections than this one. Feel free to peruse Aurelius’ Wikipedia page for more clues.

Now excuse me while I go study other images on her site for clues about Fantastic Beasts 3.

Thanks to Victor for the tip.
