Fresh off race-bending Hermione in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, J.K. Rowling has announced she’ll be doing some gender-bending in a re-release of the Harry Potter series.

It turns out that publishing illustrated re-releases of the Harry Potter series isn’t enough for the author, who clearly is eager to rev up the fandom ahead of Fantastic Beasts and The Cursed Child. On Friday, Rowling announced that she plans to publish one gender-bent Harry Potter book per year beginning this December.

The announcement immediately drew comparisons to Stephenie Meyer’s gender-bent Twilight, titled Life and Death, which hit store shelves last fall to celebrate the vampire novel’s 10th anniversary.

But Rowling insists it wasn’t Life and Death that caused this gender-bending series.

“No, it wasn’t Ms. Meyer who inspired me,” said Rowling. “Warner Brothers came to me last summer asking if they were allowed to reboot the Harry Potter movies yet, and the way the studio’s CEO, Kevin Tsujihara, said ‘Harry’… he kind of coughed through the name, and to me it sounded like he said ‘Helen.’ And then suddenly, an idea popped into my head about what a female Harry named Helen would look like. And once it was lodged in my head, I couldn’t let it go.”

She began writing the gender-bent series that night. “It was surprisingly easy,” she said. “The only person I had difficulty swapping was Professor McGonagall, who is just such a bad bitch. How could I take away such a strong female character? So I just decided to keep her as-is. Hope no one minds!”

Hypable received exclusive details concerning Helen Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and they don’t disappoint. Ron is a female named Roni, Hermione is a male named Herm, and Dumbledore is a lady (and still into men) named Dumblella. Rowling would not reveal other names at press time because she wants to keep the rest of them a surprise, but she promises they’re better than names like “Albus Severus,” “Lily Luna,” and “Hugo.”

While Rowling declined to offer us the cover because she was still working on it with Mary GrandPre (They recently butted heads over the length of Roni’s hair, sources tell us. Jo was gunning for a pixie cut while Mary was arguing for a shoulder length), we thought we’d offer some gender-swapped fanart created by DeviantArt user Maaria:

So Twilight had nothing to do with this? “I will admit, I did read Life and Death,” she told us. “It came out the same day as the Philosopher’s Stone Illustrated Edition. When I went to Waterstones to pick up a copy of my new book, I saw hers there too. I was like, ‘Woah, edgy.’ So I bought it and loved it, honestly.”

Rowling says she hopes to publish one gender-bent Harry Potter book per year, but admits that she may have to take 2017 and 2019 off to write the next movies in the Fantastic Beasts trilogy. Which, by the way, she hopes to eventually race and gender bend as well.
