The Montclair Film Festival will host a Star Wars-themed conversation between J.J. Abrams and Stephen Colbert this November.

The “Nerd-Off” between Colbert and Abrams will take place on Nov. 21 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

“We’ll geek out about all of our favorite nerdy topics,” Colbert promises in a video announcing a contest for the event. “Sci-fi. Science-fi. Sci-fiction. And, of course, Stars — both War and Trek.”

“J.J. directed movies for each of those franchises, so he’s the only person qualified to say which characters would actually get it on in your fan fiction,” Colbert adds.

Together, Abrams and Colbert are two of the highest-profile geeks in pop culture. Abrams, of course, is the director of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as well as two Star Trek films, Super-8, and many other nerd-adjacent properties.

Colbert, now the host of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, has made no secret of his geeky interests over his tenure as a talk show host. He is also a long-time supporter of the Montclair Film Festival, which the conversation will benefit. The yearly festival supports film education for students of all backgrounds.

“We remain incredibly grateful to Stephen Colbert for his unwavering support of our organization. To be able to host a visionary filmmaker like J.J. Abrams is a dream come true and we could not be more excited,” says Montclair Film Festival Executive Director Tom Hall. “This promises to be a great night.”

Colbert has spoken frequently — and memorably — about his experiences with Star Wars on both The Colbert Report and The Late Show. Last year, he fearlessly tackled the controversial topic of Kylo Ren’s laser-handled broadsaber.

And more recently, Colbert channeled the outrage of all right-thinking Americans at the news that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released early in the U.K.

Colbert’s Nerd-Off with J.J. Abrams promises to be full of similar antics (and probably several references to The Lord of the Rings.) And who knows? Perhaps Abrams will drop a few more hints about The Force Awakens before the evening is up.
