During Jimmy Fallon’s first Tonight Show on Monday, he and Will Smith performed “The Evolution of Hip-Hop.”

A play on YouTube sensation Judson Laipply’s “Evolution of Dance,” Fallon and Smith’s Hip-Hop version is an example of the type of physical comedy skits that we can expect to see a lot of on Fallon’s Tonight Show. It’s a stark departure from Jay Leno’s reign as host, and may be unique enough to attract an audience that NBC is happy with.

Dance moves in “The Evolution of Hip-Hop” as performed by Fallon and Smith included the Fish Eye, the MC Hammer, the Spank That, the Dirt Off Your Shoulder, the Making It Rain, the Crank That (Soulja Boy), the Stanky Legg, and the Dougie. They all led up to the Twerk, which Smith didn’t approve of. The performance was backed up by Fallon’s in-house band, The Roots.

The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon’s first episode featured the new host making a humble introduction which included mentions of his parents and newborn daughter, where he grew up, and what he hopes to accomplish as host of the coveted late night show. A slew of celebrities turned out for the premiere episode when they all paid Fallon back for bets they made in which they predicted he would never become Tonight Show host. Those who made appearances included Robert DeNiro, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian (who appeared on Leno’s final Tonight Show earlier this month), Mike Tyson, Stephen Colbert, and Joe Namath.

The musical guest for the first night was U2, who performed an acoustic version of their Oscar-nominated song “Ordinary Love” in the middle of the show.

Tonight Show guests in this first week of shows include Jerry Seinfeld, Kristen Wiig, Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Michelle Obama, and Will Ferrell. See a full list for the first two weeks!
