New York-based late night talk shows The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon filmed new episodes tonight – but without an audience.

Earlier we shared video of Letterman’s audience-less opening monologue which required the host to rely on banter with his band leader Paul Shaffer. Similarly, Jimmy Fallon’s Hurricane Sandy episode had to rely on his band The Roots as well as announcer Steve Higgins to bounce off of in the monologue. The full episode will include guest Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live, Top Chef’s Padma Lakshmi, Robert Zemeckis, and a musical performance by Imagine Dragons.

Both shows used a standard monologue to open. Fallon’s began with a report from outside of his NBC studio that then transitioned inside. The in-studio monologue very much feels like a rehearsal before the real show. Nevertheless, it’s a fascinating and rare type of event to watch.

No word yet on if these shows will film tomorrow and/or include audiences. Given the devastation tonight, it’s unlikely there will be an audience for Tuesday tapings.

Earlier we brought you the ten most fascinating live videos from Hurricane Sandy’s path of destruction. Numerous TV shows were canceled tonight due to local news stations in the storm’s line of attack wanting to offer round-the-clock coverage. Already, NBC has canceled two shows for tomorrow (Tuesday) and other stations may follow suit.
