Jill Soloway (Transparent) has replaced Bryan Singer as director on Red Sonja.

Millennium Films confirmed in February that Red Sonja, which has been in development since 2008, had been delayed. That delay now appears to be directly related to switching up the director for the movie to Soloway. Andrea Sperling, Soloway’s Topple Productions partner, is also coming aboard the project as a producer.

Soloway, who is also known for their work on Six Feet Under, will both write and direct the movie for Millennium Films. According to Deadline, who first reported the news, Soloway’s new take on the movie has renewed interests from studios, who have been approaching Millennium.

“I can’t wait to bring Red Sonja’s epic world to life,” Soloway told Deadline. “Exploring this powerful mythology and evolving what it means to be a heroine is an artistic dream come true.”

It is likely that the role of Red Sonja will be recast, with the most recent casting having been for Rose McGowan, who was slated to play the titular part for the Robert Rodriguez iteration of the project.

The move comes after more recent allegations of sexual assault and misconduct against Singer, dating back to January of 2019 when a report ran in the Atlantic. That report detailed allegations that Singer groped and had inappropriate sexual relationships with four young men. Singer continues to deny those allegations.
