Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, and Mike Colter look grimly impressive in the first images from Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series Jessica Jones.

The new stills offer fans their first real look at the world and characters of Jessica Jones, which is helmed by Dexter‘s Melissa Rosenberg. Though brightly lit (for the most part) the new stills underscore the grim tone fans can expect from the series when it debuts on Netflix this November.

In contrast the noirish Daredevil, Jessica Jones has been described as a psychological thriller, as much a story of its characters’ minds as it is of their work.

The series stars Krysten Ritter as the titular Jones, a retired (or failed) superhero who now works as a private investigator. Mike Colter plays Luke Cage, Jones’ love interest – before he branches out for his own Netflix series next year. Rachael Taylor is Trish Walker, Jones’ best friend, while Carrie-Anne Moss will play the “authoritative” Harper – a potential ally for Jones.

And for as many internal demons plague Jessica Jones, she’ll have to face an external evil as well. Doctor Who‘s David Tennant will play Kilgrave (known in comics as the Purple Man), a terrifying villain with the power to control others.

As the lack of smiles in the Jessica Jones stills perhaps indicate, this is all rather serious business.

Marvel recently released the first trailer for Jessica Jones, which further emphasized the moody tone of the series. Though very light on actual footage, the artistic teaser evokes Jones’ dark, psychological world – and is only more exciting now that fans can put faces to the figures suggested in the teaser.

Jessica Jones hits Netflix on Nov. 20, 2015.
