Jersey Boys brings another hit musical to the big screen, but it is only the latest in this well established trend. What other musicals are coming soon to a movie theatre near you?

Jersey Boys originated as a dukebox musical based on the hits of The Four Seasons, such as “Sherry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” and “December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)”. The musical was structured around the seasons – spring, summer, fall, winter – with each section narrated by one of the four members of The Four Seasons. Unlike other dukebox musicals that simply use existing songs and restructure them into a new narrative, Jersey Boys incorporates the songs of The Four Seasons into a history of the band itself.

The musical took home four Tony Awards, including the illustrious award for Best Musical, and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for star John Lloyd Young. Clint Eastwood’s film adaptation cleverly brought over Young to lead the cast, alongside Erich Berge, Vincent Piazza, Michael Lomenda, and Academy Award winner Christopher Walken. Eastwood took over as director from Jon Favreau (Chef, Iron Man), who was originally engaged to direct.

An accompanying soundtrack, Jersey Boys: Music from the Motion Picture and Broadway Musical, will be released on June 24. The soundtrack will include recordings by The Four Seasons’ Franki Valli, as well as cast recordings from the Broadway musical and from the film.

Jersey Boys is in cinemas now.
