Jerry Bruckheimer revealed Sunday that Top Gun 2 is still a goal for his production company, even after the death of original director Tony Scott.

It’s been nearly 30 years since Maverick, Ice Man and Goose took us to the danger zone in the classic that is Top Gun. In a discussion attended by Entertainment Weekly at the Produced By conference, producer Jerry Bruckheimer made it known that he hasn’t lost that lovin’ feelin’ for the idea of making a sequel.

Cheesy references aside, this news is somewhat surprising after talk of a sequel halted in the wake of Scott’s death (Scott committed suicide in August of last year).

Bruckheimer assured audiences that he still had plans to bring the classic characters back to the big screen saying, “we still want to do it with Tom, and Paramount are still interested in making it.”

He went on to speak about Tom Cruise’s enthusiasm about the project, telling the crowd, “What Tom tells me is that no matter where he goes in the world, people refer to him as Maverick. It’s something he is excited about, so as long as he keeps his enthusiasm hopefully we’ll get it made.”

There is no word yet on whether any other stars of the original film have interest in returning for a sequel, but this word from Bruckheimer is enough to get fans talking.

The original film chronicled the trials and tribulations of naval aviators training at the Navy’s Fighter Weapon’s school. There was action, competion, tragedy, and a lot of really cool nicknames.

Top Gun has managed to remain a classic across generations, even scoring an IMAX-3D re-release earlier this year. The cast included Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Kelly McGillis.

As of now, nothing is set in stone, but we’re all hoping that if this does go down, it includes a “what if goose lived” dream sequence. Ok, maybe that’s just us.

Would you go see a ‘Top Gun’ sequel?
