In a recent interview with X-Men: Days of Future Past’s producers, they reveal that Jennifer Lawrence could be the focus of their next spinoff movie as her character Mystique.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will hit theaters May 23 in the U.S., but the film’s producers are already thinking far in advance. Lauren Shuler Donner (who has produced all the X-Men films) says, “There was a regime [at Fox] that didn’t see the worth in [spinoffs], and the current people who run Fox understand, embrace it, and we’re going to do right by it.”

While Hugh Jackman has been the main focus of X-Men spinoffs as The Wolverine, Jennifer Lawrence’s mega-stardom looks to bring her the potential of seeing her character Mystique being fleshed out in a solo film.

Kingberg tells EW, “I love what Jen Lawrence has done with her, and I feel like because she is in such a crowded ensemble, there’s so much more opportunity if you were to follow her solo.”

They also reveal that while Mystique is very enticing, they also want to see other characters with their own solo spinoffs, saying, “I’d like to do Gambit. I’d like to do Deadpool. We’ll see. There’s a lot of really great characters.”

Fans are excited to see the young and old X-Men characters teaming up in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but there’s been some criticism that Wolverine continues to get the most screen time. While understandable from the studio’s point of view, due to his previous success, it would be nice to see other characters get a chance to shine.

Now that the producers have revealed they’d like to move into more solo spinoffs, it’ll be interesting to see if someone like Jennifer Lawrence would be up for extending her contract with Fox as she has The Hunger Games franchise to finish.

X-Men: Days of Future Past’s release date is set for May 23, 2014. The film stars returning actors Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender. Also rejoining the X-Men franchise are Halle Berry, Shawn Ashmore, Ellen Page, and Hugh Jackman. Fan-favorite Peter Dinklage will be playing the film’s villain.
