With The Hunger Games: Catching Fire set to be released next week, it’s appropriate that the just released first clip from David O. Russell’s American Hustle features Jennifer Lawrence.

The first clip from American Hustle that features Lawrence was released by MTV.

This first clip gives some good insight inside the 70’s time period that American Hustle takes place in. Lawrence’s character Rosalyn Rosenfeld puts food in the microwave, but clearly doesn’t know how it works. With tinfoil on top of the pan, the microwave sparks and blow up, much to the dismay of her husband Irving, played by Christian Bale. He was given the microwave as a present from Jeremy Renner’s character Carmine Politio, and it makes him quite upset that it’s been blown up.

Lawrence gives a great mini-speech here as she spews facts about microwaves that she thinks she knows. Before Lawrence was cast, it is said that her character didn’t play a particularly big role. David O. Russell rewrote some parts of the script to make sure that his Silver Linings Playbook Academy Award winning actress would have a much bigger presence. Will she get nominated for an Oscar again under the direction of Russell? She certainly could.

Here’s the official plot summary:

A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock the States, “American Hustle” tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, “American Hustle” defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.
