At a press event for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire attended by Hypable, lead actress Jennifer Lawrence spoke about the time she realized the franchise’s influence.

A true ‘Girl on Fire’

Her thoughts came when she was asked if she sends a lesson to viewers while portraying Katniss Everdeen in the book to film series. While Lawrence admitted she didn’t go into the project thinking about what message she wanted viewers to take away, one day a fan made her have a revelation.

“When you’re on a set you never think, at least I don’t, ‘My job is very important for the world and for people.’ I just love doing it. But I remember being on the set of the first movie, and there was a girl who was an extra who had scars, she had been burned. I remember her coming up to me and saying that she was too self conscious to go to school when she was younger, and The Hunger Games and Catching Fire made her feel proud of her scars and her friends called her ‘The Girl on Fire.'”

Lawrence was very moved by the girl. “I just remember crying – I still can’t tell the story without tearing up – and I remember just calling my mom and being like, ‘I actually get it.'” The actress chocked up while telling the story to the media. She then recalled a particular point in the third book that related to the girl’s story. “I remember reading that in the third book when Katniss goes to the hospital [after being burned].”

Encounters like these remind Lawrence how important the series is to readers and viewers. “Sometimes it can seem so pointless [to do these movies] because between hair, and make up, and clothes – but, there’s lives you can touch without even meaning to.”

Multiple shots at portraying a role

Co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth attended the same media event, and Hypable directly asked them about the special opportunity to play a particular character over several films. We wanted to know if they’ve evolved their character as they spend more time in the heads of these fictional people.

Said Hutcherson who plays Peeta, “I think it’s cool because we’re getting new and different input now. I think that for me, the places that Peeta goes naturally just based on the story – I want to follow that. As far as bringing a bunch of things of my own to it, there’s definitely little parts that I bring from myself. I think it was really all in the original story and script.”

Added Hemsworth (Gale), “I always feel like when I’m shooting something, I’ll often let the character go in different directions either because of the director’s influence or what we work out on set. When you have something like this, where you have three different films to do it over, it’s definitely going to head in directions you maybe didn’t think of. But it’s part of a collaboration. People are developing a character and your instincts may go in a different direction because of another actor’s instincts.”

Catching Fire opens in theaters on November 22. Tomorrow, look forward to our interview with Jeffrey Wright who plays Beetee.
