The first season of HBO’s Westworld threw us for a loop more than a few times, but nothing compared to the shocking reveal we got about a certain character in the finale. [Warning: spoilers ahead for season 1!]

We’re talking of course about the big reveal in which we find out Bernard is in fact a robot.

Given the secrecy surrounding major plot points on big series like Westworld, Game of Thrones or even The Walking Dead, we wouldn’t have been surprised to discover that actor Jeffrey Wright didn’t find out about the true nature of his character until way late into production.

Interestingly enough, however, Wright revealed during The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actor Roundtable that showrunners clued him into who Bernard really was pretty early on in production.

While Wright said he understands why some actors prefer the surprise to be sprung on them almost at the last minute, he explained that he was happy about getting clued in almost right away.

“I didn’t know when we shot the pilot, but when we came back, [showrunner] Lisa Joy pulled me aside and said, ‘Bernard’s uh…he’s very complicated. How do I say this? How do I…?’ and then she dropped it on me,” explained Wright of the moment he found out. “And yeah, it was necessary because there are little flashes of forecasting that I would throw in.”

It sounds like we’re going to have to make it a point to re-watch the first season of Westworld to see if we can catch the hints Wright is referring to!

Season 2 of Westworld is set to premiere sometime in 2018 on HBO.
