After more than a decade of development, it looks like Fletch Won will finally come to fruition with Jason Sudeikis in the lead role.

The Hollywood Reporter says Sudeikis is in talks to star as the iconic Fletch in Fletch Won, a remake or reimagining of the Fletch series from the ’80s that starred Chevy Chase.

Fletch Won has been in the works for some time, but its fruition took a turn towards more likely in February 2011 when Warner Bros. purchased the rights to the film.

They went through several writers in search of a screenplay they liked, and David List took over writing. His screenplay pleased both the studio and the producers of the film, and it looks like Sudeikis liked it as well.

The film is rumored to have a Beverly Hills Cop or Midnight Run vibe to it. It will be an origin story (the Fletch Won title pun makes that seem likely) that THR describes as “a gritty action comedy with heart and more tonally in line with McDonald’s novels than the Chase movies.”

Sudeikis has a relationship with Warner Bros. that Fletch Won will continue. This past summer his film We’re the Millers was a surprise success, bringing in almost $270 million worldwide. A sequel has been announced.

The former SNL star has other exciting projects coming up, too. This year he’ll be back with Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Jason Bateman, and Charlie Day for Horrible Bosses 2, which also stars Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine. Tumbledown and Sleeping with Other People are two more films he’ll be starring in (tentatively) this year.
