BBC One revealed the first trailer for their epic mythological series, Atlantis, and it has us thirsting for more!

Helmed by the Misfits show runner Howard Overman and produced by Merlin creators Julian Murphy and Johnny Capps, Atlantis follows the young Jason who arrives in the magical, fantastical (but ultimately doomed) city where he encounters familiar figures from the myths we know so well. Watch the trailer below.

The trailer gives us a glimpse of Jason discovering Atlantis for the first time and wondering what he’s doing there, and how he found it. A mysterious woman tells him, “You were drawn here, by forces so powerful that they stretch between the worlds.”

Mystery woman also tells Jason that he “must not tell anyone that [he] journeyed through the gate.” This implies that the legendary island of Atlantis is in fact in a different world, or realm, than the current world.

Atlantis will show us legends like Hercules and Medusa before they become legendary, which is similar to the approach Merlin took to tell the story of the famed magician and his King Arthur.

In showing us the legends before they begin, Atlantis will surely change a couple of historical facts for sake of orginality and creativity. You can already see this with the casting of Mark Addy as Hercules, who’s not the chisseled and muscular man we know from legend.

In fact, in an previous interview the show creator, Overman, joked and said, “I’m sure there will be some Greek scholars who will get very angry about what we’ve done, but, you know, Greek scholars, I’m pretty confident we can take them.”

We’re excited to see Atlantis on our screens this autumn no matter what changes they make to canon, and we will absolutely keep you updated as soon as they announce a release date for the series premiere.
