Zero Dark Thirty star Jason Clarke has been cast as John Connor, a character last played by Christian Bale, in the upcoming reboot Terminator: Genesis.

As Deadline reports, the reboot is being directed by Thor 2 helmer Alan Taylor and Clarke has become the first actor to be cast. There has also been quite a lot of speculation surrounding the role of Sarah Connor, with Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke and Short Term 12 star Brie Larson the presumed frontrunners. As Taylor has previously directed Emilia Clarke on Game of Thrones she could very well be the likely choice, although Larson also just picked up a Gotham Award for Best Female Actor in Short Term 12.

Deadline also notes that Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to appear in his signature cyborg role.

Jason Clarke has become something of a hot commodity of late, particularly following his fantastic performance in Zero Dark Thirty. He has also appeared in The Great Gatsby and White House Down this year, and is set to star in the upcoming sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Deadline writes, “Terminator: Genesis is being spearheaded by Skydance Productions’ David Ellison, who is teamed with Megan Ellison’s Annapurna in the effort. Paramount has signed on to distribute, and has set a July 1, 2015 release date. Annapurna purchased the rights for over $20 million and the expectation is that they will be able to make at least two films before certain copyrights revert back to the property’s creator, James Cameron. Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier wrote the script.”
