The holidays are about to be a done deal and now it’s back to a normal work schedule and a long wait for the longer days of spring and summer.

Winter break is a pretty tough time for TV, with nearly everything on hiatus and holiday programming taking over, but there’s a ton of shows returning in January to help you blast past those post-holiday blues. And, several new series are making their highly-anticipated debuts to kick off the winter TV season.

Here’s some TV shows heading back (or coming to) to your screens shortly after the new year:

‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’

The last stand between the Baudelaire trio and Count Olaf is coming to Netflix on New Year’s Day. Season 3 will cover the remaining material in the novels, so it is the last season for this show.

So far, fans have been generally pleased with how the TV adaptation handled the novels, so this season is expected to be a hit. And, New Year’s Day is the perfect time to binge since you’ll likely be chilling on the couch and possibly recovering from whatever happened to you leading up to (and after) you rang 2019 in.

‘Gotham’

Gotham is back on January 3 for its fifth and final season to complete the Batman origin story. This season will certainly bring the characters to a new level as they settle comfortably into the iconic personalities that comic and TV fans have grown to love over the years. One thing is for sure – this season will certainly be explosive and go out with a bang.

‘Gen:LOCK’

Rooster Teeth’s latest series is making its long-anticipated debut on January 26. That may seem like a long time from now, but never forget how quickly January flies by.

The mecha/fantasy series is set on a dystopian Earth where a team of young pilots fight robots and deal with cultural issues. Actor Michael B. Jordan, who seems to be everywhere at this point, voices lead character Julian Chase, a Vanguard pilot from Brooklyn who forms an elite team.

David Tennant (who basically sounds like the Tenth Doctor), Maisie Williams, and Dakota Fanning also lend their voice to the project, which will have aesthetics similar to RWBY. There hasn’t been much hype out there yet, but it will surely come within the next few weeks, especially with such big names attached to this new venture.

‘How to Get Away with Murder’

Annalise Keating and her dysfunctional crew will be back for more action on January 17. The mid-season finale ended with a major shocker after Nate killed Bonnie’s bae (aka the interim District Attorney) and Gabriel was revealed to be Sam’s son.

Why is Gabriel suddenly popping into Annalise’s life? What will Nate do now that he is a murderer? There are so many questions that needs answers in this back half of season 5. It’s the type of salacious drama that will get you through the second half of January with ease.

‘The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’

The hilarious Netflix series is coming back on January 25, but sadly it will be the last half of the final season. Kimmy’s wild adventure from the bunker life to being a full-fledged New Yorker has been quality guilty pleasure TV for nearly three years.

However, all good things have to eventually come to an end, which is always the better option instead of running the show into the ground. It’s going to be interesting to see how they wrap up Kimmy, Titus, Lillian, and Jaqueline’s storylines for good.

Also, it’s not too late for Netflix to give Titus his own show because he’s obviously the funniest person on the show. Just saying.

‘Black Lightning’

The fight for Freeland continues when Black Lightning comes back on January 21. The CW superhero show is experiencing a lineup change by moving from Tuesdays to Mondays, but fans can’t wait to see what goes down in Season 2.

The recent reveal of Lightning’s costume, her on-the-run storyline with Khalil, the introduction of several comic characters like Looker and Grace Choi, and a mysterious new metahuman are all ongoing issues that will continue to play out in 2019.

The Arrowverse Lineup

The recent Elseworlds crossover still has fans talking and thankfully they won’t have to wait too long for The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl to return.

The Flash picks back up on January 15, while Supergirl and Arrow return the following week on January 20 and 21, respectively. So, it looks like the new year won’t waste any time packing in a lot of superhero stories.

‘The Passage’

This new drama is set to debut on January 14 and will focus on Amy Bellafonte (Saniyya Sidney), a Black girl who is chosen to be a test subject for a virus that will either cure all diseases or kill all humans. What an unlucky kid.

But, she has Agent Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) on her side to protect her at any cost. The show will follow their journey to keep her safe as they confront those in charge of this dangerous experimentation as well as a new race of people inside the walls of Project Noah, the facility where this testing happens.

It certainly has a promising premise and right now science fiction shows involving kids (hello Stranger Things) are all the rage, so it’s worth a shot.

Of course, it would be impossible to list everything that will be hitting cable TV and streaming services in January, but hopefully this list will ease the pain of going back to your regularly scheduled life program.
