Disney is giving Lady and the Tramp a live-action reboot, and they’ve enlisted Janelle Monae to provide some new tunes for the flick.

Disney has been giving all of their classic cartoons new life with live-action reboots, and most of them have been met with high praise from audiences. So it isn’t surprising that the entertainment giant isn’t looking to stop the remakes anytime soon, the most recent one being Lady and the Tramp for Disney+.

The film will be led by Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux, but according to Variety, they’ve enlisted some serious talent for the music in the film. Janelle Monae is set to provide two new, original songs for the movie. As Kaylin Frank, a vice president in Creative Music and Soundtracks at Disney explained at the MUSEXPO Creative Summit, though the movie is set in 1910 and will have a blues-ragtime vibe to it, Monae’s iconic sound will still absolutely be represented.

In addition to Monae’s new songs, her longtime collaborator, Wondaland, is going to work on reinventing one of the songs from the original film that has, to put it lightly, not aged well. That song is “The Siamese Cat Song,” which was originally recorded by Peggy Lee and was a big heap of harmful Asian stereotypes.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Disney has needed to go back to update (or remove) highly racist stuff from their classic cartoons. In the live-action remake of Dumbo, the horribly racist crow characters — the main crow character was even named Jim Crow — were totally struck from the new take on the cartoon.

However, even though it is always hugely upsetting to watch a cartoon you loved as a kid and see some pretty awful racist characters or language, we’re very happy that Disney is working so hard to correct those mistakes. We’ll be very interested to see how Wondaland retools “The Siamese Cat Song,” and we hope whatever takes its place doesn’t isolate and stereotype huge swaths of the audience.

And while we’re incredibly thrilled to see the eradication of decades-long racism nestled away in a kids’ cartoon, we’re also excited to have some new music to look forward to from this movie to truly make it feel like an updated take on the story. We can’t wait to see what Janelle Monae is bringing to the table in Lady and the Tramp.

The film doesn’t have a specific release date, but it is expected to release shortly after the November Disney+ launch.
