In a world of stunning inequality, the writers of Jane the Virgin spread the villain love to both sexes and it makes for a more compelling storyline.

In a world where men get all the main roles, more money, more everything, there is one place where men and women are created equally. That show is Jane the Virgin. They are the heroes and the villains on a rich, diverse show that has won critical and fan acclaim.

The show boasts more female characters than most shows in recent years. You have your heroes: the Villanuevas aka Jane, Xo, and Alba, and Nadine, Michael’s partner. You have the villains: Petra, Magda, Luisa, and Rose, who was just revealed to be the show’s main villain, Sin Rostro.

Let’s start with Petra and Luisa. These two women are villains by circumstance, not necessarily by choice. Luisa accidentally artificially inseminated Jane. Instead of doing the right thing and letting her know immediately, she hid it. Since then Luisa has taken the wrong path at every turn. Petra, who has begun turning her villain trajectory around, started the show as a stone cold bitch out to keep her husband around so she could collect her $5 million prenup money. Since then she has: had an affair with her husband’s best friend, lied to Jane about wanting the baby, blackmailed Michael, and kidnapped her attempted kidnapper/blackmailer.

Magda, Petra’s mother, is the next major villain on the show mostly because she hasn’t fully revealed herself to the characters or even to the audience the depth of her evil. Magda was disfigured by Petra/Nadia’s then boyfriend because she didn’t want them together. What she lied about was the fact that she is able to walk, something viewers witnessed when she pushed Jane’s grandmother down the stairs. Petra was able to figure this fact out recently, but one has to begin to wonder what other secrets she is hiding.

And now we get to the real villain, Rose, aka Sin Rostro. Who everyone on the show, and even viewers, assumes is the person behind the drug cartel that plagues Miami. Sin Rostro disappeared in 2010 and came back as the show started. Rose is behind numerous murders, including one that viewers recently witnessed when she drowned her husband in concrete. She is also behind getting her ex-girlfriend Luisa institutionalized. She is also behind the secret operating room underneath the hotel that changes the faces of people illegally.

It’s nice to see the villainy being spread out amongst the women, while still giving all of them a kernel of redeem-ability. How and when and if they can be redeemed remains to be seen but one thing is for sure: we are really enjoying watching it all unfold.
