Following the somewhat stunning Golden Globe win of Gina Rodriguez for Best Actress in a Comedy, this avid TV watcher decided to give Jane the Virgin a shot. And thank goodness I did!

Early last year when the new shows were announced, one stood out for its audacious and ridiculous title. Jane the Virgin was clearly designed to be a conversation starter, but would it be any good?

The show started off with a modest rating and lots of critical praise, ending up on multiple year end lists and grabbing two Golden Globe nominations, one for Rodriguez and one for Best Comedy. This is a huge deal because the CW is not a network that garners any kind of outright acknowledgement that their shows are equal contenders for most award shows. The only logical decision? Binge watch the entire nine episodes of season 1 in two days!

What I found out was that I was severely missing out on a great, well-written, well-acted show! I should have listened when my friend told me to watch and I apologized immediately. I even went so far as to purchase three episodes off of Amazon Prime so I could watch them all in a row and not miss anything.

So have you thought about giving the show a shot? If the answer is, no, or anything else, you need to change it to yes, right now. Afraid you won’t be able to catch up? No problem! I’ll try to lay out as much of the show’s first 11 episodes right here for you!

Our heroine is Jane, a virgin, who has been seeing Michael, a detective who has been investigating a serious drug lord for two years. During what is supposed to be a routine trip to the gyno, Jane is accidentally inseminated. The doctor, Luisa, was supposed to put the sperm in her sister-in-law, Petra, without telling her brother, Rafael, a reformed bad boy who beat cancer but can no longer have kids. Making the baby that Jane is now carrying his only chance to have a child.

Jane just happens to work at the hotel that Rafael runs for his father, Emilio. Emilio is married to Rose, who is Luisa’s secret lover. Jane lives with her promiscuous mother, Xiomara or Xo, and her very religious grandmother, Alba. Jane decides to keep the baby, much to Michael’s dismay. At first she is going to give the baby to Rafael and Petra, but she soon discovers that she has feelings for Rafael. Rafael discovers that his wife was sleeping with his best friend, who also was recently murdered, and that she is not who she says she is — she’s on the run from a horrible ex-boyfriend who tried to kill her, but scarred her mother. Magda, who was hit by a car during that incident, is revealed to not be an invalid when she pushes Alba down the stairs. Yikes!

Eventually, Jane learns that her father is famous telenovela star, Rogelio, and Xo’s one true love. During all this change, Jane finds out that Michael hid information from her and she realizes that that fact, plus her burgeoning feelings for Rafael, are not just hormones so she ends things with Michael. He does not take that well and vows to win her back. In the meantime he embarks on an affair with his partner, Nadine, and they discover that the hotel is being used to illegally change people’s appearances via plastic surgery.

Each episode gives you an update, so even if all that information I just gave you doesn’t make sense or is a bit much to handle, the show moves at a nice pace while helping you remember what you already found out. So catch up anywhere you can because this is one hot show and you don’t want to miss it!
