According to Deadline, James McAvoy and Clarke Peters have come aboard the BBC’s adaptation of the beloved Philip Pullman series, His Dark Materials.

McAvoy will be playing Lord Asriel, an explorer and deeply respected political and academic figure, as well as the father of Dafne Keen’s Lyra Belacqua. The role was originated by Daniel Craig in the 2007 movie, The Golden Compass.

Meanwhile, Peters, who recently starred in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, will play the master who raised Lyra at Jordan College.

McAvoy and Peters join the previous announced Keen (Lyra Belacqua), as well as Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is playing the adventurer, Lee Scoresby.

His Dark Materials is slated to air on BBC One. It is being produced by Bad Wolf, and written by Jack Thorne, of The Cursed Child fame. Tom Hooper, who directed The King’s Speech, will be directing the series. Philip Pullman is serving as an executive producer on the project.

The His Dark Materials trilogy follows the story of Lyra, who lives in an alternate-universe version of Oxford, which exists in parallel to our own. In this world, people are accompanied by dæmons, physical manifestations of their soul in animal form. The Magisterium exerts control over society, and Lyra uncovers a sinister plot headed up by them, after her friend, Roger, is kidnapped by “Gobblers.”

There is currently no projected release date for His Dark Materials. However, reports suggest that Bad Wolf and BBC Worldwide have entered discussions to secure an international distributor for the series, with Apple and Netflix among the candidates for the U.S.
