James Gunn took to Twitter to answer some fan questions about the lovable Groot, and the info might be the most heartbreaking news we’ve ever heard.

Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for Avengers: Infinity War. Read on at your own risk!

There is a lot to talk about when it comes to Infinity War. The ending of the film caused a lot of division in the MCU fandom, and lots of fans are left wondering what is coming next in Avengers 4.

Sure, the devastating events at the end of Infinity War will likely not stick, and somehow Thanos’ decision to wipe out half of the universe’s population will be undone. Even though those characters turned to dust will likely not stay that way, Marvel worked overtime to make sure the final moments of the disintegrated characters would be a gut-punch to the audience.

While Tom Holland’s performance of Peter Parker’s final moments have gotten the most press, it turns out Groot’s final words were just as tragic. James Gunn made sure fans were aware of the meaning behind that final farewell in a recent Twitter post.

While the character’s final words were his classic “I am Groot,” the impact those words had on Rocket made it seem as though those final words packed quite a punch. Since Groot’s language is never translated for us, we usually have to rely on the reaction of others to infer his meaning, but it was tough to figure out what his final words meant in such an emotional moment.

But, as it turns out, Groot’s last words gave some pretty heartbreaking insight into his relationship with Rocket. Thankfully, James Gunn translated that final “I am Groot,” and it’s a pretty big deal, y’all.

Indeed, according to James Gunn himself, Groot’s final words on this mortal coil were used to call Rocket “dad.” Ever since Rocket attempted to re-grow Groot after his heroic sacrifice at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket has certainly taken on a fatherly role in regards to everyone’s favorite, dancing, lovable tree. But to hear Groot acknowledge that in such a huge way, in his final moments, it just heart-wrenching.

While we know chances are pretty solid that Groot isn’t going to stay dead (thank goodness), we can’t help but feel gutted over the character’s final words. So if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to just step into the other room and have a bit of a cry over this one.
