Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn reminds us that the Guardians will fly on post-Avengers 4.

Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to end with the fourth and final Avengers movie, which hits cinemas in 2019.

With Marvel’s Phase 4 plans so shrouded in secrecy, and Kevin Feige having hinted that they’re phasing out the phases altogether, some fans have been led to believe that we’re heading for a complete reboot of the MCU, with new heroes and, perhaps, a brand new universe.

But James Gunn has taken to Twitter to remind us that when it comes to the Guardians of the Galaxy, at least, we won’t have to worry about saying goodbye to the current team any time soon:

Of course we already knew that there’ll be a Guardians 3, directed by James Gunn, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man will also stick around post-Avengers to complete his trilogy.

But what might be reassuring here is that the stories will continue to be interlinked, with Gunn saying that, “What happens to the characters [in Avengers 4] will of course affect them” moving forward. So, for anyone worried that Avengers 4 is a hard close to the MCU as we know it… well, don’t be.

However, the future of Guardians and the Spider-Man trilogy says nothing of the other beloved MCU heroes. With many of the actor contracts coming to an end, Phase 4 (or whatever it’ll be called) will most likely focus on new heroes — or new incarnations of the heroes we know.

Aside from Spider-Man and the Guardians, we can also expect some of the newer heroes (including Black Panther and Captain Marvel) to stick around for whatever comes next.
