Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is still two years away, but James Gunn knows how to keep the buzz alive!

When Marvel first announced Guardians of the Galaxy, it was to very mixed reactions. But last year’s smash hit success proved that director James Gunn knew exactly what he was doing, and fans were relieved to learn that he’s staying on for the second — and maybe the third — installment.

Gunn attended the Avengers: Age of Ultron premiere, and spoke to Vulture about his plans for the sequel. He’s just now started work on it, and his obvious enthusiasm is inspiring.

Says Gunn, “There’s a lot of stuff I’m excited about in the new movie. I’m still excited about Star-Lord’s character and where he goes. At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it’s exciting to go there.”

Obviously Vulture then asked whether this means Peter Quill will finally meet his father, who Yondu was supposed to deliver him to all those years ago.

Gunn wouldn’t answer, but we know he’s got plans for the O.G. Star-Lord. In a previous interview with Empire Magazine, Gunn revealed that Peter’s dad would be a different character than the one in the comics, and that Peter’s parentage has, “been part of the plan since the beginning.”

“I knew for a long time what the story of the second one was gonna be,” Gunn reveals. “And the third one!”

We can’t wait… but we’ll have to. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 hits cinemas on May 5, 2017.

Luckily there are a lot of other exciting Marvel movies to keep us occupied until then.
