Avatar 2 director James Cameron has hired science fiction writer Steven Charles Gould to pen four stand-alone books that will expand his Avatar film universe.

James Cameron’s Avatar was released in 2009 and sparked a 3D revolution. His 2009 space-filled film generated $2.78 billion at the box office and currently holds the top grossing film of all time. This of course led to him deciding to create three Avatar sequels.

And now, according to THR, we’ll be seeing four novels based off of his Avatar universe written by author Steven Charles Gould, whose latest novel was Jumper. That novel was turned into a film in 2008 and starred Hayden Christensen as a young man who can jump through walls.

Gould is the president of the Science Fiction Writers of America and was a finalist for the Nebula Award, which annually recognizes the best works of science fiction or fantasy published in the U.S. during the previous year.

James Cameron believes Gould to be “one of the shining lights in contemporary science fiction.” Cameron continued saying, “We’re very fortunate to have Steven bring his formidable talents to the Avatar Universe. He is already working closely with the screenwriters to flesh out the expanding world of Avatar.”

So it looks as though Cameron is interested in interweaving his Avatar film sequels with novels written by Gould. This is definitely an interesting decision, but simply further reveals the dedication that James Cameron has decided to put into fleshing out his Avatar franchise.
