J.K. Rowling continues to be our favorite human (and Twitter presence), giving the perfect response to a fan who wanted to finally give up.

We all know that the Internet can be a dark place. Nasty, all-caps, derogatory comments flood social media outlets and comment sections, and we’re left with a hopeless, helpless feeling as we watch common decency fall away. Evidently, being able to hide behind a screen brings out the worst in some people.

But sometimes, someone reminds us that there is still such a thing as compassion to be found, even online, and your voice can be heard over the din of millions.

Such was the case for one Twitter user, who asked J.K. Rowling a simple, heartfelt and heartbreaking question: what do you do, when all you want is to give up?

Obviously this is a big, heavy question which must have taken a lot of courage to ask, and it is perhaps not easily answered over a medium like Twitter.

And yet Rowling, who always seems to know what to say, managed to find a way to respond:

Rowling finished up her comment with some wonderful, inspirational words that we hope her struggling fan took to heart:

And if you find yourself suffering as well, we hope you take Rowling’s gesture to heart, too. Sometimes it might be worth looking beyond yourself, out into the beautiful world and all it still has to offer.

Over the past few years, J.K. Rowling has been very candid about her own struggles with depression, which she has said included thoughts of suicide. She made it through, and penned one of the best book series ever written.

Countless fans have found solace and relief in the Harry Potter series, both through reading the books and participating in the online fan community.

Her beautiful, immersive writing is just one of the many ways in which Rowling reminds is that there is always hope to be found, even in the darkest of times.
