While Hollywood is still reeling from the news that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII, Paramount Vice Chairman Rob Moore said yesterday that Abrams is “committed” to producing a third Star Trek and another Mission: Impossible film for the studio.

In an interview with The LA Times’ Hero Complex, Moore said, “J.J. will continue to develop projects for us including a new Mission: Impossible and he is committed to produce another Star Trek.” Abrams would likely have only produced the already confirmed Mission: Impossible 5 anyway, but the big question is whether or not he’ll be back at the helm for another Star Trek film.

Abrams will be preoccupied with Star Wars and Disney through Star Wars: Episode VII‘s release in 2015, so the question is whether Paramount would want to wait until 2017 at the earliest for another installment in the Star Trek franchise. That said, when all is said and done there will have been a four year gap between the first two installments, so don’t necessarily count Abrams out just yet for the Star Trek 3 director’s chair.

That’s not all, Abrams is also collaborating with Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron on a television pilot titled Believe, which Cuaron co-wrote and will direct for NBC, that follows a girl with special powers who is protected by a man recently sprung from prison. Add that to the countless other projects Abrams and his production company Bad Robot are producing, and Abrams’ schedule seems ever more impossible.

It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Abrams meets this challenge, and we’re certainly rooting for him. The question is whether you’d like to see Abrams back for Star Trek 3 or completely focus on Star Wars?
