In iZombie season 1, episode 9, “Patriot Brains,” Liv takes on Blaine after eating the brain of a sniper.

28 milliseconds later, indeed

The episode opens where the last one left off, as Liv nearly misses an interaction with Blaine. Liv sees The Candyman, triggering a brain flash to Blaine hitting Jerome over the head.

Ravi talks into a voice recorder, wondering when he’ll start to see some effects from the zombie rat bite. Liv rushes into the morgue, upset at her recent discoveries. The two come to the conclusion that Jerome’s bones were moved to the crazy couple’s house. Liv asks Ravi to check in on Major, as he asks her to talk to Lowell again. Checking in on Major as he hides a gun in an underwear drawer, Ravi discovers Major reading up on brains online.

A paint ball game turns horribly morbid when a bloodied corpse shows up on the field.

Where do you get your brains?

Liv tearily confronts Lowell, calling him out for not questioning the brains of the young people Blaine has been delivering. Lowell won’t give Liv Blaine’s number, and wants to protect her because… he loves her. Liv retorts coldly as she heads back to the morgue for the dead paintball player.

At the crime scene, Liv and Ravi listen in as Clive talks about Everrett Adams, a former army ranger who was sniped by a real gun. Speaking to Everrett’s brother Harris, the sleuths discover that the deceased’s ex-wife called off their marriage whilst Everrett was overseas.

Having eaten Everrett’s brain, Liv joins Clive to discuss what motives Penny may have had to kill her ex. A move for Penny’s husband Sean’s new job led to a heated custody battle between Penny and Everrett. Speaking to the daughter, Anna, Liv’s brain flashes to Everrett violently punching Sean as Penny threatens her ex with a knife. Leaving Penny’s house, Clive asks Liv why Penny wouldn’t have reported Everrett’s violent outbreak, as it would’ve won her the custody battle.

Brain food PTSD

Liv is haunted by violent images of Blaine killing his victims, making it impossible for her to sleep. Out for a run, Liv realizes that she needs to fulfil a desire to play paintball. While playing the game, she comes upon the bullet shell from the killer’s gun.

Back at the morgue, Liv tells Ravi that the perch of the sniper might be in a different location. Liv begins to recall her fist zombie meal to Ravi, quelling his worries that he’s been infected.

Major investigates the gym Julien works out at, asking the trainer for hardcore means of gaining muscle mass. When Major brings up eating brains as an option, the trainer doesn’t seem as disturbed as we would’ve expected. Later, Julien overhears the trainer speaking of his odd encounter with Major.

Clive and Liv go through Everrett’s house, discovering a journal with the simple message “one is less than man” scrawled on it. Liv recognizes it as a sniper mantra of saving lives. Looking at Everrett’s sniping gun, she brain flashes to Everrett’s brother Harris being discovered messing around with said firearm.

Lowell’s dainty fingers

Harris comes in to speak with Clive and Liv. The teen is drawing disturbing pictures, explained by the loss of his mother, brother, and male role model in a short span of time. Visiting Penny’s neighbor, the sleuths learn of the property damage Everrett caused, and the paranormal electronic abnormalities that followed the neighbor’s filing of a noise complaint.

Lowell knocks at Liv’s door and offers up a formidable apology for eating the kids’ brains. Liv kisses Lowell, allowing Livwell to once again sail. After sex, Lowell postulates that Blaine scratched him to get closer to the musician he adores. After Lowell shows Liv the disturbing menu of human delicacies Blaine sends out, she vows to kill the O.Z. Lowell calls Blaine over for a jam session the next day, setting the stage for Liv’s assassination of the pusher.

Blaine chats with his lackeys about a man named Kaiser that’s interested in a business meeting with Blaine. Heading over to Lowell’s, Blaine asks Julien to take care of the “gym rat” problem. In Blaine’s meeting with Mr. Kaiser, the client asks Blaine for some more exciting brains, this time requesting a famous astronaut’s.

To kill an undead

Liv discovers Ravi sniffing some of her brain food, to which he announces that it isn’t possible for the rat zombie to spread the virus to humans. Liv dotes with a “We’re in this together! I got your six, Ravi!” to which he adorably replies, “Roger that, soldier!”

Clive shows the doctors how Sean killed Everrett with a flying drone holding a gun. Liv hilariously pins Sean to a wall as Clive arrests the murderer.

Speaking of murderers, Liv readies Everrett’s sniper gun, aiming a reticle at Blaine’s head. Major’s lights aren’t working, signalling Julien’s attack. Major stabs Julien with keys, and shoots The Candyman dead. Flashing us back to Veronica on the rooftop with her camera, Liv watches the scene, unbeknownst to those she’s observing. Liv doesn’t want to be a killer, and spare’s Blaine’s life.

Major calls Clive over to help clean up the mess. Unfortunately, Julien’s body isn’t there. Back on the rooftop, Lowell flashes to the same scene where Blaine kills Jerome. Attacking Blaine with a fork (you would, Lowell), Blaine shoots his gun at Lowell. But hey! We didn’t see it hit, and neither did Liv! We’ll wait until next week to see if he’s really dead.
