Issa Rae is officially making the leap from HBO to the silver screen!

Variety reports that Insecure star Issa Rae has officially signed on to appear in Fox 2000’s upcoming adaptation of Angela Thomas’ debut novel, The Hate U Give.

Adapted for the big screen by Audrey Wells, the coming-of-age drama centers around a 16-year-old girl named Starr who grew up in a poverty-stricken neighborhood. Now that she’s in high school, Starr attends a suburban prep school located in a surrounding much different from the one she grew up in.

Starr’s two worlds collide, however, when she witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend.

Rae will share the screen with actress Amandla Stenberg, who many might recognize from The Hunger Games. The actress, who also starred in last year’s adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s novel Everything, Everything, has been tapped to play Starr in the upcoming film.

The Insecure creator will play April in the film, a character who is described as being the activist who helps Starr find her voice and speak up about what she witnessed.

From the description alone, it definitely sounds like Rae’s character is going to play a pretty important role in the film, and we can’t wait to see how April and Starr’s relationship develops in the midst of the tragedy and injustice that unfolds.

Helmed by George Tillman Jr., The Hate U Give also stars Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common.

There’s currently no release date set for The Hate U Give, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we hear of one!
